The Barnesville Hospital Leadership Team, comprised of 26 Department Leaders, has pledged to have more community involvement outside of the hospital facility. Team members, Karen Mihalic (Diagnostic Imaging) and Shawn Meier (Laboratory Services), volunteered at the Barnesville Elementary School Title 1 Family STEAM Night. This was an opportunity to assist the administration of the elementary school to encourage the students and family members to discover the fun of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math through hands-on activities.
Karen stated, “What a fantastic way for our Team to give back to our community which has been so very supportive through all of our Hospital Projects. We want to inspire the younger generation to not only strive to do their best in school, but to be willing to make an impact on their future.”
Shawn and Karen offered the students the opportunity to view blood cell slides on Microscopes, and to see firsthand what their bones and organs look like on previously taken images. Students were very interested at the Barnesville Hospital Technology Exploration Table, asking many questions and excited to see what was actually going on inside their bodies. Both departments take Math and Science and merge them together, creating physics which allows them to help diagnose what conditions may exist when you are ill or injured.
Shawn noted, “There were many students who stepped right up, asked questions, and were very interested. This was an opportunity to encourage their imagination. We may have just interacted with some of our future employees of Barnesville Hospital!”
The Barnesville Hospital Leadership Team is also collaborating with Barnesville Elementary School on a weekly basis, hoping that hospital employee’s presence will help lessen the fear that comes along with a “trip to the hospital”, as well as providing support to our community. The motto of the Leadership Team goes two fold- Together We Make a Great Team, as a unit, and as community team players.
