Terry Hickman, retired EMS Coordinator for Monroe County, receives Commendation from Richard Doan, CEO, representing the Barnesville Hospital Board of Trustees.
The Barnesville Hospital Board of Trustees recently commended Terry Hickman for his outstanding contributions to the health and welfare of the citizens of Monroe County. Mr. Hickman, a lifelong resident of Beallsville, became involved in emergency services in 1960 when he, as a teenager, along with fellow Beallsville residents Charley Brock and Robert Wilson, became the first EMT trained responders in Monroe County. Hickman went on to seek grant funding in 1975 which allowed the organization of EMS services and the purchase of 4 emergency vehicles for Monroe County. He served as EMS Coordinator until his recent retirement from the position. He continues to provide emergency care through service with the Beallsville Emergency Squad. According to Peggy Douglass, Director of Education & Outreach at Barnesville Hospital, "Having grown up in the Beallsville area, I know first-hand that when there was a task to be done involving emergency response for our area, Terry was always one who was quick to step to the plate and lend a hand." In recent conversations with Mr. Hickman, Douglass recounts " Terry approaches his years of service, not as a duty or a job, but as something that he feels passionately about." The Board of Trustees Commendation reads as follows: Whereas, the American College of Emergency Physicians has proclaimed May 14-20, 2006 as Emergency Medical Services Week with the theme, "EMS: Serving on Health Care`s Front Line", and Whereas, access to quality emergency care dramatically improves the survival and recovery rate of those who experience sudden illness or injury, and Whereas, Mr. Terry Hickman was instrumental in the 1975 organization of Emergency Medical Services in Monroe County, and Whereas, Mr. Hickman has provided life-saving care to those in need 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for 46 years, and Whereas, Mr. Hickman has engaged in thousands of hours of specialized training and continuing education to enhance his skills, and Whereas, Mr. Hickman has provided education in emergency medical services to over 4,000 emergency medical students, volunteers and technicians, and Whereas, The Citizens of Monroe County have benefitted greatly from the knowledge, skills and service of Mr. Hickman and it is appropriate to recognize his many contributions and accomplishments. Now, therefore, be it resolved that the Board of Trustees of the Barnesville Hospital Association, Inc., hereby resolve that Mr. Terry Hickman be publicly recognized and commended for his outstanding contributions to the health and welfare of the citizens of Monroe County.
