Quality Surveys - Barnesville Hospital continues to strive to provide quality care to all of the patients served. This "Quality Caring" is repeatedly reaffirmed through surveys by The Joint Commission, Ohio KePro, American Association of Blood Banks, Ohio Department of Health, Ohio Department of Aging, American College of Radiology, and the US Department of Health & Human Services through its' MQSA (Mammography Quality Standards Act) inspection. In addition, Barnesville Hospital has chosen to participate in voluntary reporting of information to the Hospital Quality Alliance, a public-private collaboration to improve the quality of care provided by the nation's hospitals by measuring and publicly reporting on that care. According to Richard Doan, CEO, Barnesville Hospital, "Barnesville Hospital staff take great pride in the quality of care achieved by our team and constantly strives to improve that quality. We make every effort to provide the highest quality health care to everyone who enters our doors."

Commitment to Patient Safety - Staff at Barnesville Hospital have had a long-standing commitment to achieve and maintain the "quality caring" outlined in the hospital's mission statement. Patient safety plays such a vital role in this achievement that it has been given "top priority" by the Board of Trustees, Administration, and all staff. This patient safety priority was bolstered through state and federal grants which enabled a medication system upgrade. State-of-art intravenous infusion pumps assist nurses to better manage complex medication dosing regimens. "We are always looking for changes that will promote patient safety," according to Cynthia Touvelle, Director of Nursing and Care Management. "These systems have enhanced the accuracy and safety of the correct medication being administered to the patient." Newly acquired medical/surgical beds provide additional safety features to decrease patient falls, prevent skin breakdown, and improve disease management.

Community Involvement - Through a partnership with Barnesville Hospital, the Village of Barnesville is building a healthier workforce among village employees, volunteer fire fighters and EMS personnel, thanks to support from the State of Ohio's Healthy Ohioans program. According to Peggy Douglass, Director of Education & Outreach at Barnesville Hospital, "Our vision is to be a model of excellence in rural healthcare and a vital center of community health activities. Receipt of this $25,000 grant from the Foundation for Healthy Communities, is allowing Barnesville Hospital to provide resources, expertise, and services intended to improve the health and wellness of Village employees."

Fourth grade students from Barnesville Public and Barnesville Independent Schools had the opportunity to display their creativity and imagination in a unique project sponsored by Barnesville Hospital. Students from both schools were asked to submit drawings depicting "things that made them happy." The 41 pictures received are being displayed throughout the hospital and may be viewed on the Outreach link of the hospital's website at barnesvillehospital.com.

Respiratory Care Recognition - Barnesville Hospital earned Quality Respiratory Care Recognition (QRCR) under a national program aimed at helping patients and families make informed decisions about the quality of the respiratory care services available in hospitals. About 500 hospitals or approximately 10% of hospitals in the United States have applied for and received this award. The QRCR program was started by the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) in 2003 to help consumers identify those facilities using qualified respiratory therapists to provide respiratory care. Hospitals earning the QRCR designation ensure patient safety by
