Barnesville Hospital’s Nursing unit is, of course, the largest department in the hospital. The Nursing department consists of several units:

  • Critical Care Unit
  • Coronary/Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
  • Emergency Room
  • Medical/Surgical Unit
  • Skilled Beds
  • Outpatient Department
  • Surgery
  • Cardiac/Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Critical Care Unit

The Critical Care Unit, commonly known as CCU, is dedicated to providing specialized, intensive observation and care for patients of any age with cardiovascular, respiratory, or other medical and/or surgical problems.

The CCU is located on the first floor of the hospital. Visiting hours for CCU are from 8:00AM to 8:00PM: however, permission from the nurse’s station must be obtained prior to entering the unit.

Emergency Room

The new Richard L. Doan Emergency Room is available to provide care to patients in need of immediate medical assistance, 24 hours a day. The E.R. is located on the first floor, in the west wing, at the front of the hospital. E.R. has its own entrance which is very clearly marked as E.R. The new E.R. boasts 8 private treatment rooms, a private waiting room, bedside registration, and state of the art patient monitoring and technology.

Medical/Surgical Unit

The Medical/Surgical Nursing Unit (AKA “North”) is located in the North Wing of the hospital, on the first floor. It has a total capacity of twenty patients.

Skilled Care Beds

Whether you are a patient at Barnesville Hospital or a patient out of the area, if you require Skilled Care you can utilize the skilled care beds at Barnesville Hospital. Skilled care provides extensive 24 hour nursing care and rehabilitation services which are required due to illness or injury. Available therapies for skilled care include:

  • Nursing
  • Physical Therapy
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Speech Therapy
  • Nutritional
  • And other restorative therapies

Method of Payment includes Medicare, insurance or self pay. Medicaid does not pay for skilled care. To determine if you might be eligible please call the Discharge Planner 740-425-5155 or the Social Worker at 740-425-5112.


The Outpatient Department is located on the 2nd Floor and has the capability to admit, treat, and recover all ages of patients. All outpatient surgical patients report to this department. A few of its capabilities are:

  • Administration of IV
  • Biopsy
  • Thoracentesis
  • Paracentesis
  • Tensilon testing
  • Lumbar puncture
  • Bone Marrow

Outpatient is open Monday through Friday with flexible hours to accomodate patient needs. Normal hours of operation are from 6:45AM to 3:15PM, excluding holidays. If a patient is not ready to be discharged by 3:15PM, they will be transferred to the Medical/Surgical Unit, or kept on the Outpatient department with appropriate staff until discharge or transfer criteria is met.

Surgical Services

The Surgical suites are located on the second floor. Surgical services are offered 24 hours a day.

Surgery offers procedures done by staff physicians in the following categories:

  • General Surgery
  • Opthamology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Podiatry
  • Pulmonary
  • Anesthesiology

Cardiac/Pulmonary Rehabilitation

The Cardiac Rehabilitation Unit is open Monday through Friday, 7:00AM to 5:00PM. Cardiac/Pulmonary Rehab is located on the first floor of the hospital, by Medical/Surgical and Rehabilitation Therapies. A patient must have been referred to Cardiac/Pulmonary Rehab by a physician. After the initial evaluation, the patient is then scheduled for a class time and starting date.

Classes meet Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays for sessions that are approximately one hour in length. A patient may continue attending the classes until their goals are met or he or she has reached 36 sessions.
